Amicus Briefs Must Provide Courts With Real Assistance

Degen and Catherine Valerio Barrad - More than 85 amicus briefs were filed with the California Supreme Court in connection with 12 cases for which it issued published opinions in August 2005. Given that the court issued opinions in 123 cases during its 2004-05 reporting year (according to a recent Workload Report), nonparty briefing represents a significant volume of the briefing that the court receives each year.
