When Chief Justice Ronald M. George was summoned to Sacramento the day after announcing his retirement in July, he knew the governor would ask for his input on possible successors, so he wanted to have a name ready.
The person he recommended - 3rd District Court of Appeal Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye - was nominated just six days later by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
