Judge Supports Oral Arguments
LOS ANGELES - Justice Norman L. Epstein had practiced only civil law when Gov. Jerry Brown appointed him to the bench in 1975. To acquaint himself with criminal law, Epstein started reading every new criminal opinion from the state appellate courts. He briefed them, organized them, analyzed them and then made his comments available to his Los Angeles Municipal Court colleagues. Eventually, his work was published in a book titled Digest of California Criminal Cases.
