Although a select group of venture capital firms currently dominates venture fundraising efforts in the U.S., experts say the number of new firms harnessing small funds is proliferating.

U.S. venture capital funds raised $7.1 billion in the first quarter, a 76 percent increase over the same period last year and the biggest commitment to venture capital funds since the third quarter of 2008, according to data compiled by Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association.
