Taking Pleasure in Others' Suffering

Forum Column - By Pablo Agrio - Time after time, in criminal cases where the death penalty is applied, I watch in astonishment as the television screen is filled with people cheering and pumping their fists in celebration of the announcement that the defendant should die for his crime. If I was not aware of what was happening and had just glanced at the screen, I would think that they were celebrating the outcome of a sporting event or the announcement of some important good news.
