US attorney's office celebrates contributions of South Asian community

On Jan. 11, U.S. Attorney André Birotte Jr. hosted the Central District's first South Asian diversity event in the courtroom of Judge Otis D. Wright. The event celebrated diversity in the United States Attorney's office, the federal courthouse, and the broader Los Angeles legal community. A number of federal judges, including U.S. District Judge Manuel Real, U.S. District Judge Terry Hatter, U.S. District Judge Ronald Lew, and U.S. District Judge George Wu attended, as did Federal Public Defender Sean Kennedy, and several deputy federal public defenders. Speakers included Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Halim Dhanidina, the first Muslim judge appointed to the bench in California; Laboni Hoq, litigation director at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center; and U.S. Magistrate Judge Jay C. Gandhi, the first South Asian federal judicial officer in California. In addition to highlighting the progress by the South Asian community, the event also addressed the subject of hate crimes committed against South Asians and other persons — a focus area for the Department of Justice.
