Circuit Judge Sidney Runyan Thomas of Montana, whom President Barack Obama interviewed at the White House last week as a potential U.S. Supreme Court nominee, would be a classic outsider choice.

He'd balance the high court's Ivy League tilt while also adding a voice from the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, which represents a fifth of the country's populace.
