Award in GM Fuel-Tank Case Seen as Record

The verdict of nearly $5 billion that a Los Angeles Superior Court jury ordered the General Motors Corp. to pay a family and their friend who were severely burned after the fuel tank of their car exploded in a rear-end collision is believed to be the largest product liability award ever assessed.
