On Sept. 28, 2014, Gov. Jerry Brown signed Senate Bill 1249 to ensure the safe management of shredded automobile and metal appliance waste. The bill authorizes the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to establish management standards for metal shredding facilities that would apply in lieu of California's hazardous waste management standards.
