Jury in defense-friendly Torrance awards record-setting $58 million to savagely beaten plaintiff

Lawyers for a Guatemalan housepainter who was beaten by an unlicensed security guard successfully persuaded a jury that the security company who failed to check the guard's credentials and train him acted negligently.

A jury in defense-friendly Torrance on Friday unanimously awarded $58 million to a Guatemalan house painter who suffered brain damage when his head was beaten in by an unlicensed security guard at a bar.


The verdict is the largest single-plaintiff award to come out of the Torrance courthouse and among the biggest in California history, according to the presiding judge, Dudley W. Gray.
