Covington advises Microsoft on large patent deal

Microsoft reached an agreement Monday with AOL Inc. to purchase 800 patents and license an additional 300 patents for $1.056 billion in yet another high-profile large patent acquisition.

A team of lawyers from Covington & Burling LLP in San Francisco led Microsoft Corp.'s purchase Monday of $1 billion-worth of patents from AOL Inc.


The purchase is another example of a growing trend in which companies are buying large patent portfolios as a weapon for future litigation wars, experts said.
