Prisons tap private firm to install cell-phone jamming system

Last week's announcement shows California looking to the only other state where Global Tel Link currently operates a communication-blocking system: Mississippi.

As wireless service providers race to provide comprehensive cell phone coverage, California prison officials are laying plans to do the exact opposite.


The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation wants to install a system in every prison to block illegal communications made by inmates on contraband cell phones and other wireless devices.
