Death Toll

By Arturo J. Gonzlez Mario Paz, a 64-year-old father of six, was killed Aug. 9, 1999, during a raid of his Compton home. A masked SWAT team from the El Monte Police Department conducted the raid. They were looking for narcotics. During the raid, Paz was shot two times in the back. He was unarmed. Newspaper accounts state that the officer thought Paz was reaching for a gun. No narcotics were found in the home.
