LOS ANGELES - Carlton A. Varner, a career-long Sheppard Mullin Richter & Hampton antitrust attorney who served as the firm's chairman for seven years and proudly clung to his small-town roots, died Nov. 21 of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 61.
