Vaughn R. Walker, the Chief Judge of the Northern District of California who made headlines by issuing the ruling overturning the voter-approved ban on gay marriage, is stepping down and plans to leave the court early next year.
Walker?s surprise announcement came late this afternoon. According to a press release, Walker plans to step down as chief judge by December 31 and leave the court altogether by February to return to the private sector.
