Robert Berke, a Santa Monica criminal defense attorney known for his dogged efforts to limit the use of jailhouse informants, died Saturday. He was 61.
Doctors believe he died from complications of the brain inflamatory disease meningoencephalitis, though the cause is not certain, said longtime friend Gigi Gordon of the Post Conviction Assistance Center.
