Oil and gas interests begin to challenge local fracking bans

Several cities and counties around the state are approving bans or moratoriums on fracking and the oil industry is hoping the courts will roll back these gains.

Opponents of fracking in California have been unable to get a statewide ban on the controversial oil extraction technique, but they are making headway at the local level. This year, several cities and counties have either passed fracking moratoriums or are weighing such a move, while others have approved ballot measures that will leave the decision up to voters this November.
