Forum Column - By Julia Harumi Mass - On April 7, 2003, Oakland police used "less-than-lethal" weapons against peaceful anti-war demonstrators and dockworkers at the Oakland Port, injuring 45 people. The Oakland Police Department's "crowd control techniques" included firing directly at demonstrators, dockworkers and bystanders with wooden dowels and shot-filled bean bags, throwing sting-ball grenades filled with tear gas and rubber pellets into crowds of demonstrators and using their motorcycles to run into demonstrators.
