California has a long history of leading the nation on reproductive rights. The state Legislature passed one of the earliest therapeutic abortion laws in 1967. The state Supreme Court was the first in the country to strike down a criminal abortion law, recognizing a constitutional right to make childbearing decisions four years before Roe v.
