Lawyer softball league crowns spring-summer champions

The Landau Lawyers League softball playoffs have drawn to a close for the spring-summer season, with local attorneys having taken to the field to compete for bragging rights. After the dust settled, the Westside Raiders of King Holmes emerged as the "A" division champions, outhitting Lewis Brisbois to win, 12-2. King Holmes batter Jose "Lucho" Valdez knocked in the game's only home run and afterward was named championship MVP. In the "B" championship game, O'Melveny & Myers edged out Loeb & Loeb, 16-11. O'Melveny player Eric O'Connor was crowned game MVP. Home run hitters included Steve Eubanks and Pete Patel of Loeb & Loeb and Sherin Parikh of O'Melveny. Wood Smith took home the "coed" championship, triumphing 18-2 over Allen Matkins. William "Kwam" Ngissah of Wood Smith won MVP honors after swatting a grand slam over the fence, and teammate Stewart Reid also notched a homer. In the coed semifinals, Wood Smith had earlier bested Hinshaw & Culbertson, 16-6, and Allen Matkins had narrowly defeated Winston & Strawn, 19-18. — Ben Adlin
