Video on demand finds its legs

This year may have marked the beginning of a slow and steady upswing as Hollywood studios and their deal-making lawyers discovered a potential goldmine in video-on-demand distribution.

For more than a decade, Hollywood studios have scrambled to stem lost revenues from increasing illegal content sharing on the Internet and steeply declining DVD sales. But industry watchers say 2011 may have marked the beginning of a turnaround for the studios - albeit a slow one - with a potential goldmine in profits from video on demand distribution.
