The Dangers Of Privatizing Public Defense

Fresno County is expected to invite bids from contract attorneys for criminal defense services. Will our system of justice be compromised?

Later this year, Fresno County is expected to invite bids from contract attorneys to provide criminal defense services to persons unable to hire their own counsel. If approved, the county operated public defender's office would be eliminated, privatizing the representation of indigent defendants in California's 10th largest county. With budget pressures continuing to build throughout the state, the result could well prove cascading, and more importantly, calamitous.
