On November 4, 1816, Stephen J. Field--the first Californian appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court and one of its most important and colorful characters--was born. A '49er who arrived in San Francisco after a perilous journey across Panama, Field was elected to the California Supreme Court in 1857. Six years later Abraham Lincoln appointed him to the high court.
