Dozens of members of the Inland Empire’s legal community attended an Aug. 4 re-enactment of arguments in the landmark school desegregation case Brown v. Board of Education as part of the John G. Gabbert Historic Oral Argument and Lecture Series. Speakers included Erwin Chemerinsky, dean of UC Irvine School of Law, and Senior U.S. District Judge Terry J. Hatter Jr., who spoke about impacts of the decision. Re-enacting argument on behalf of the boards of education was Christian C. Buckley, a partner with Buckley & Buckley in San Diego. Argument on behalf of the plaintiffs was re-enacted by Andre Birotte Jr., U.S. Attorney for the state’s Central District, and Marcellus A. McRae and Julian W. Poon, partners with Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP in Los Angeles. Presenting the decision were retired 4th District Court of Appeal Justice John G. Gabbert and 4th District Court of Appeal Presiding Justice Manuel A. Ramirez.
