Assembly takes step forward on sports betting

A state constitutional amendment could be passed ahead of a repeal of federal restrictions.

Assemblyman Adam C. Gray has introduced a constitutional amendment that could provide the first step toward legalizing sports betting in California.

The amendment comes on the heels of an announcement last month that the U.S. Supreme Court will hear an appeal by New Jersey that would allow sports betting under the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act, which has effectively banned the practice on a federal level since 1992....
