Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge James Bianco fired the public defender's office from handling the case of a man, George Vasquez, because of excessive delays in his trial.
LOS ANGELES -- Seventeen years into a two-year commitment, a man whom prosecutors petitioned to incarcerate as a sexually violent predator may be released if a judge finds he was denied the right to a speedy trial. If the defendant's motion to dismiss that petition is successful, it might have encouraging implications for defendants in similar circumstances.
