A Hollywood writer who has not defended a $56 million wrongful death suit for more than a year escaped paying up Monday after a Los Angeles County judge granted his motion to set aside the default judgment because he wasn’t properly noticed in time.

LOS ANGELES — A superior court judge on Monday set aside a $56 million default judgment in a wrongful death case against a Hollywood screenwriter jailed on charges he brutally murdered his girlfriend.
