San Diego County Deputy District Attorney Wendy Patrick landed her first music prize at 4, taking home a superior blue medal for her violin performance and scoring a chance to choose the after-recital restaurant for dinner with her parents.

“Sometimes I got to pick a movie, too,” recalled Patrick, who admitted she’s forgotten some of the other perks her parents offered up after standout showings in music competitions.
