ACLU files class action to reunify immigrant parents, children

Advocates have expanded a complaint filed last month seeking to reunify an immigrant mother and daughter separated by the government to include another family and are seeking class recognition for hundreds of other families.

U.S. District Judge Dana Sabraw of the Southern District of California is presiding over a lawsuit that challenges a Trump administration initiative to separate children from parents as a way of discouraging asylum seekers.

Advocates have expanded a complaint filed last month seeking to reunify an immigrant mother and daughter separated by the government to include another family and are seeking class recognition for hundreds of other families.

American Civil Liberties Union lawyers said the case seeks to head off a troubling practice under the Trump administration of separating immigrant children from their parents.
