9th Circuit appoints special prosecutor to Arpaio case

Joe Arpaio, the embattled former Arizona sheriff who rose to national prominence for his controversial policing tactics, criminal contempt conviction and eventual presidential pardon, will soon have a new legal opponent.

On Tuesday, a divided three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals announced the court would appoint a special prosecutor to defend a district judge's refusal to vacate Arpaio's criminal contempt conviction.
