Justice Kennedy announces retirement, setting stage for epic confirmation battle

Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, widely regarded as the most influential member of the U.S. Supreme Court because of his willingness to side with liberal members of the bench on certain high profile cases, announced Wednesday his plans to retire by the end of next month, setting up what will likely be a tempestuous battle to confirm his successor.
