LOS ANGELES -- Appellate attorney and novelist Cynthia Tobisman compares her life to Swiss cheese.

"There are holes ... and I write in the holes," Tobisman said. "Maybe I'm waiting in line at the grocery store -- I'm writing a scene," Tobisman continued. "I might be driving to an appointment, I'll dictate something, and then I'll email it to myself. ... And [the story] just grows little by little."
