A Los Angeles County Superior Court judge declared a mistrial Monday in the $29 million Johnson & Johnson cosmetic baby powder case after being told by the jury that any further deliberations would be hopeless.

The Pasadena jury impaneled by Superior Court Judge Margaret Oldendorf deliberated five days following the three-week trial — the fourth such in Los Angeles County in less than a year.
