Arif Alikhan, a former federal prosecutor who directs constitutional policing and policy for the Los Angeles Police Department, said such a role by an outsider is important for law enforcement agencies, while the new Los Angeles County sheriff has reassigned the two attorneys who held that position in his department.

Newly-elected Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva's decision to transfer out two attorneys who provided constitutional oversight could jeopardize progress the department has made such as curbing violence against jail inmates, according to his predecessor and attorneys knowledgeable about the positions.
