Despite deficits, California Western School of Law makes land purchase

The law school’s finances won’t face scrutiny from Moody’s because its bonds have been paid off.

SAN DIEGO — California Western School of Law has tried in recent years to trim operating deficits that have drawn the focus of Moody’s Investors Service and resulted in a bond rating downgrade.

But when 15,000 square feet of land next to the school’s downtown San Diego campus went on the market earlier this year, Dean Niels B. Schaumann said the opportunity to buy the parcel was one the school could not pass up given its space needs...
