U.S. District Judge S. James Otero has taken senior status after 30 years as a judge, increasing the number of vacancies to 18 in the ongoing political battle over federal bench seats in California.

Otero's decision was not previously reported, but appeared on an updated list of vacancies maintained by the U.S. Courts.
