LOS ANGELES -- Within a week, a local legal beef between Kanye West and his estranged publisher EMI has turned into bi-coastal federal litigation.

EMI April Music Inc. filed a lawsuit Thursday in the Southern District of New York, asking for declaratory and injunctive relief and damages in response to West's "efforts to renege on his bargained-for contractual obligations to the company."
