In July, New York became the first state to ban cat declawing. New York veterinarians now face a $1,000 fine for declawing cats except for medical necessity. The bill was championed by Assemblymember Linda Rosenthal, who has called it a “brutal surgical procedure” and “a cruel, unnecessary amputation that results in the removal of most of the first bone, the tendons & muscles.”
