Even in the face of record high stock prices in 2019, activism levels for the year remained high, as according to Lazard over 200 campaigns were initiated by 147 investors at companies with market caps in excess of $500 million, including 43 "first timers" who had no prior activism experience. When smaller companies are included, 474 companies -- more than one in 10 of all U.S. public companies -- were subject to activist demands in 2019 according to proxy firm Georgeson.
