Google has immunity from game developers’ actions, judge says

Despite claims that “loot boxes” in online games are illegal since they mimic gambling, U.S. District Judge Beth L. Freeman in San Jose sided with Google that the alleged misconduct is likely covered under the Communications Decency Act.

A federal law protecting content moderators from third party liability shields Google from a class action challenging its policy allowing developers to sell in-game items for real money, a company attorney argued Thursday.
