Alejandro N. Mayorkas, a Los Angeles partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr LLP and the former U.S. attorney for the Central District of California, was named by President-elect Joe Biden as his choice for homeland security secretary on Monday.
Mayorkas, born in Cuba, would be the first immigrant head of the department if he were confirmed by the Senate. He would also be the first Latino.
