Retired Orange County Judge Jack K. Mandel, known for his charity and helping troubled students, died Dec. 24. He was 84.
Former Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. appointed Mandel to the bench in 1981, where he stayed until 2000.
Mandel turned down the first offer he got to become a judge, he said in a Daily Journal profile from 1988.
