Nearly 70 OC cases dismissed over mishandled evidence

The dismissals by Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer come in response to a series of internal audits conducted by the sheriff's department that found systemic delays and irregularities in how its deputies collected and booked evidence over a three-year period.

Mishandling of evidence by Orange County sheriff's deputies in thousands of criminal cases from 2015 to 2018, the majority of which resulted in convictions, has led DA Todd Spitzer to dismiss some or all charges in nearly 70 of them, according to a report from his office this week.
