State labor secretary faulted in audit of unemployment fraud

Secretary for the California Labor and Workforce Development Agency Julie A. Su, under consideration as President Joe Biden’s deputy labor secretary, suspended security measures that might have caught the fraud now estimated at possibly $31 billion, according to the State Auditor.

State Auditor Elaine Howle released a blistering report on California's Employment Development Department on Tuesday, amid news that fraud against the system could hit $31 billion.

Howle's report cited the troubled agency for two major failures. First, she wrote, it has failed for years to address long-standing problems, leaving it vulnerable when the COVID-driven financial crisis hit last year.
