California’s new US senator assigned to Judiciary Committee

Alex Padilla is not a lawyer, but is no stranger to litigation. As California’s secretary of state from 2015 until last month, he was one of the most sued people in the state, mainly due to his duty to oversee elections.

Alex Padilla, California’s new Democratic senator, has been assigned to the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee, he and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer confirmed Tuesday.

California’s other Democratic senator, Dianne Feinstein, will remain on the committee, but is no longer her party’s ranking member. That honor goes to Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Illinois, who was named the committee’s new chair.
