Ex-Butte County judge admonished for remarks to litigants, staff, attorneys

Through her attorney, Judge Barbara Roberts apologized to those whom she may have offended with her comments and said her goal was to motivate parents to change their behavior so their children could be safely returned home.

Retired Butte County Superior Court Judge Barbara Roberts was admonished Thursday by the Commission on Judicial Performance for belittling and demeaning litigants in her former juvenile dependency assignment and for yelling at court staff.

The public admonition detailed multiple accounts from 2019 to 2020 of Roberts calling parents “pathetic,” “ridiculous” and one father a “raging alcoholic.”
