LA settles with nursing home in ‘patient dumping’ case

As alleged in the complaint, a skilled nursing home receives the highest reimbursement rates from Medicare-covered residents who test positive for COVID-19, with Medicare paying up to an additional $600 a day for COVID-19-positive residents. Medicare reimbursement rates decrease the longer a resident stays at the facility, resulting in the facility receiving less money from the federal government for the patient’s care.

A nursing home accused of illegally dumping residents to make room for more lucrative COVID-19 patients was ordered in a settlement with the Los Angeles city attorney to nearly double its nursing staff, allow increased oversight and pay $275,000 in penalties and costs.
