Public defender blasts LA courts' pretrial jail extension

“These orders do not promote safety; they keep our clients, mostly from Black and Brown communities, in jail when they are presumed innocent,” Los Angeles County Public Defender Ricardo Garcia wrote in a tweet.

For the third time since January, statutory deadlines for criminal trials and juvenile dependency matters have been extended in Los Angeles County, a move Presiding Judge Eric C. Taylor described as necessary during the pandemic, but one the county's public defender called an abrogation of his clients' due process rights.
