US Supreme Court overrules 9th Circuit, remands suit against oil companies to federal court

The decision affects a lawsuit filed by San Mateo, Marin and Santa Cruz counties along with the city of Imperial Beach against several oil companies.

In the wake of a climate change ruling last week in favor of oil company defendants in a lawsuit by the city of Baltimore, the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday vacated a 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that remanded a lawsuit to state court.

"The judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded to the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit for further consideration in light of BP p.l.c. v. Mayor and City Council of Baltimore," the court ruled.
