DA challenges Newsom’s naming of law firm to review murder conviction

San Bernardino County District Attorney Jason M. Anderson challenged the authority of anyone outside a court of law reviewing the case, saying, “The executive branch is not free to ignore the outcomes of numerous prior judicial reviews.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom has hired Morrison & Foerster LLP to review Kevin Cooper’s conviction for a grisly 1983 quadruple murder in Chino Hills.

Newsom also ordered 14 pardons, 13 commutations and 8 medical reprieves for other prisoners in his announcement Friday.
